{"id":109,"date":"2010-05-03T14:05:13","date_gmt":"2010-05-03T18:05:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.drbarrybrody.com\/blog1\/?p=109"},"modified":"2010-05-03T14:05:13","modified_gmt":"2010-05-03T18:05:13","slug":"new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.drbarrybrody.com\/blog1\/?p=109","title":{"rendered":"New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I grew up in New York.<\/p>\n<p>The front door to our apartment had\u00a0two dead bolt locks, but I paid them no mind.\u00a0 Perhaps I paid the locks no mind because I could not bear knowing the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Many, many years later I realized\/explained that the locks were there to protect me and my family from my natural father coming back and doing something unspeakable.\u00a0 Whether this was the &#8220;truth&#8221; I will never know.\u00a0 All the people who could explain the locks are long gone.<\/p>\n<p>This morning, as I was leaving home a SUV drove up out of nowhere and stopped a few feet from my driveway.\u00a0 A woman gets out and comes towards me carrying some papers.\u00a0 She appears to be familiar, and I become anxious.\u00a0 She reaches into her papers and hands me a leaflet.\u00a0 It is from a religious group detailing the coming end of the world.\u00a0 I am relieved and shaken.\u00a0 Her group believes that they know the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Several years ago, a mentor of mine killed himself.\u00a0 His detractors posted his autopsy report on the web.\u00a0 When alive, the mentor would call me late and night and ask &#8220;Why do these people hate me so much?&#8221;\u00a0 I never had a satisfying answer.<\/p>\n<p>Because I am not sure anymore if these sorts of experiences can be explained.\u00a0 Explained to be explained away.\u00a0 Words used to substitute for a perhaps intolerable experience.\u00a0 Words used to make the experience more tolerable and perhaps go away?\u00a0 Words used to filter\/buffer that which can&#8217;t be filtered\/buffered, perhaps only distorted and transformed into some untruthful facsimile of the &#8220;truth&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, when my mother dies, we travel to New York one last time.\u00a0 We drive past the apartment with two dead bolt locks.\u00a0 I think to stop and see the apartment again.\u00a0 Perhaps I can find the truth.\u00a0 But of course someone else lives there now.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As for the truth&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A young man discovers a truth he should have never known.\u00a0 His boss, a psychologist is sleeping with\u00a0female patients.\u00a0 The young man tells the authorities.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t believe him.\u00a0 They think he is lying and don&#8217;t investigate.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, a female patient comes forward.\u00a0 The authorities investigate.\u00a0 The psychologist admits, but only to having sex with this one patient.\u00a0 The authorities let him continue to practice.<\/p>\n<p>Then several other women come forward.\u00a0 The authorities realize they have been lied to and want to revoke the psychologist&#8217;s license.<\/p>\n<p>It is too late.<\/p>\n<p>He voluntarily surrenders his license.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I sit in the first pew, again, waiting my turn to testify.<\/p>\n<p>The couple in front of me sit waiting for the judge to enter the courtroom.<\/p>\n<p>They will argue\/compete\/contest for a child or the &#8220;truth&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I have been witness to too many of these competitions for the truth.<\/p>\n<p>I seem to see a pattern.\u00a0 The couple and the third.\u00a0 Someone will have to be sacrificed.\u00a0 Perhaps the child.\u00a0Perhaps me.\u00a0Certainly the truth.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A patient recently tells me that they\u00a0believe that all truth is a conspiracy.\u00a0 The &#8220;truth&#8221; is merely a spin that they want us to believe.<\/p>\n<p>The real &#8220;truth&#8221; is what underlies the &#8220;spin&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I look up belie and belief in the dictionary.<\/p>\n<p>One letter separates them.\u00a0 The truth and the lie.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if they are somehow connected.<\/p>\n<p>Then I wonder about a bright lite-at birth and at death.<\/p>\n<p>What if the light is the truth that can&#8217;t be known, but only experienced.<\/p>\n<p>What if before we are born, perhaps before we are &#8220;conceived&#8221;, we experience the &#8220;truth&#8221;, the white light, and as we travel down the birth canal we forget it because it is such a shock coming into this other world?<\/p>\n<p>And what if we spend our lives somehow looking for that unknowable truth, that white lite, only to be re-connected with it at death or at a moment of sacrifice?<\/p>\n<p>Is that why sacrifice is considered a sacred act?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The last words my dying wife spoke to me were &#8220;Can I go?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I lied and said &#8220;Of course&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some days I wonder if there is a white light out there waiting for me.<\/p>\n<p>Or is the truth really that this is just another lie?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Brody<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I grew up in New York.
